The Wiccan calendar, the Wheel of the Year, is divided into eight holidays, or Sabbats. These holidays correspond to specific astronomical and agricultural events.
Samhain ~ Sundown October 31st, an agricultural holiday for the third and final harvest, considered Wiccan New Year.
Yule ~ Astronomical holiday falling between December 20th and 22nd, this is the Winter Solstice.
Imbolc ~ February 1st or 2nd, an agricultural holiday when the ewes are in milk, deep winter but light returns.
Ostara ~ Astronomical holiday falling between March 20th and 22nd, this is the Spring Equinox.
Beltane ~ May 1st, an agricultural holiday when the first white flowers bloom, May Day.
Litha ~ Astronomical holiday falling between June 20th to 22nd, this is the Summer Solstice.
Lammas ~ August 1st, an agricultural holiday for the first harvest, the first cutting of the grain.
Mabon ~ Astronomical holiday falling between September 22nd to 24th, this is the Autumn Equinox, the second harvest, and considered Wiccan Thanksgiving.
The above dates reflect the Wiccan holidays in the Northern Hemisphere. Since the Sabbats celebrate astronomical and agricultural events, practitioners in the Southern Hemisphere would set their dates accordingly.
Rose & Antler is a Southern Californian, urban coven. Although we may be farther removed from a tangible experience with seasons and agrarian cycles than covens in less temperate and more rural environments, we seek to connect with the energies of the Sabbats through decor, food, song and ritual. The following is our annotated gallery of our Sabbat celebrations.
